By the mid-1970s, a group of designers from different backgrounds had started to practise and promote design in Valencia in Spain. Those dedicated to product or furniture design had been trained as industrial draughtsmen in the arts and crafts school there or worked in the technical offices of factories, combining artisanal procedures with industrially based thinking. This was the case for Jose Juan Belda, the interior and product designer who is the subject of Javier Gimeno Martinez's book. Other members of the small group of people who founded the design scene in Valencia were graphic or product designers, also trained at the arts and crafts school.
