A review of research that focuses on collecting within broader considerations of aesthetics is a welcome addition to fine art, design and material culture studies. This volume addresses not only the consumption contexts of gender, desire and identity but also the impact of unique forms of production, in both their industrial and craft forms and in their consuming intentions. Editorially defined and articulated through four dedicated strands of inquiry, Material Cultures, 1740-1920: The Meanings and Pleasure of Collecting presents its authors' research and approaches with particular attention to type and meaning of decorative and applied art object collections.
