A Modernist Universe Knoll Textiles, 1945-2010

In the past two years, Rizzoli published an elegant and illuminating monograph of the Knoll company's history, The Gallery at Bard Graduate Center mounted an in-depth scholarly exhibition on the history of Knoll Textiles, and the company was presented the National Design Award for Corporate and Institutional Achievement. The time is right for all this attention: after seventy years of creating iconic furniture and fabric designs and shaping the look of the American modern interior, the company is very worthy of the retrospective treatment. Yet many of the key participants in the Knoll story, not least Florence Knoll Bassett, are still living, so their memories can be mined for accounts of the creative process through which they transformed a small furniture company into an international design powerhouse.
