摘要

Urban Design Since 1945: A Global Perspective is a recent and ambitious addition to the burgeoning literature on urban design. The author, David Grahame Shane, is a prolific theorist and professor who has taught at Columbia University, University College London and Politecnico de Milan. The book recounts the narrative of a major global shift from the European metropolis to the Asian megacity since 1945. According to Shane, examples of the European metropolis are the large cities after the Second World War, such as Berlin, Brussels, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome and Vienna, which have served as metropolitan capitals of nineteenth-century global empires. The Asian megacity, on the other hand, is represented by contemporary cities of larger than twenty million in population, most of which are in Asia and represent 8% of the world's urban population, including Delhi, Jakarta, Kolkata, Manila, Mumbai, Shanghai and Seoul (p. 29).
