These two volumes offer us the chance to examine the reactions of both the extreme right and the left to the progress of the European Union (EU) over 50 years of growth. They appear opportunely, at a moment when the EU is suffering a 'crise de confiance' following the failure of the 2005 Constitution proposal and is losing confidence in its ability to deliver the Lisbon accord; the democratic deficit grows larger and the ability of the EU to establish a clear role on the world stage is hindered by organisational incompetence and lack of internal coherence.
