Die Weltbiihne [The World Stage] was a small but influential weekly which existed from 1905 (initially entitled Die Schaubuehne) until 1933; it was banned after the Nazis took power. Though each edition contained only around 30 pages and no photographs, the political insights of its contributors, the incorruptibility of its editors Siegfried Jacobsohn,rnKurt Tucholsky and Carl von Ossietzky and the stylistic quality of its writing made the weekly into a beacon in dark times for Germany and the rest of Europe. A complete reprint of Die Weltbuehne was issued by the Athenaeum Verlag in 1978, but at a price which only university professors and libraries could afford.
