摘要

This first issue of 2008 is unique inasmuch as it includes two core themes: the first concerning Poverty in Contemporary Europe, the second entitled Rethinking the Left in France. The linkages are coincidental, but nevertheless significant, in that much of the core discourse of the French Left is informed by the factors that have contributed to the development of deprivation and poverty within European society in general and is consequently orientated towards the shaping of appropriate social policy. The debate in France thus mirrors some of the thinking that influenced social policy in Germany and Britain, covered in the first set of articles on poverty.
