Civil Society and Gender Justice. Historical and Comparative Perspectives

The civil society paradox concerning the discrepancy between the ideal notion of a civil society promoting inclusion, participation and equality, and a 'lived' or 'experienced' civil society which, repeatedly over the course of history, demonstrates exclusionary practices, is at the core of this highly engaging and sometimes provocative volume which addresses the paradox in both historical and contemporary (mostly) European contexts. Taking gender justice in civil society seriously requires, the volume demonstrates, a thorough rethinking of the notion of 'civil society' which hitherto has been theorised and investigated in non-gendered ways by more mainstream scholars (Hagemann, p. 19).
