On coming to power in 1997, Tony Blair asked one of his ministers working in the area of social policy to 'think the unthinkable'. This volume seeks to do this in a German context by aiming to put forward new ideas under the banner, as its title states, of a 'neo-social future'. It starts from the premise that the welfare state, as created in the years following the Second World War, has created a swathe of problems that urgently need to be addressed. To give just one example, it is argued that the abolition of fees in higher education in the Federal Republic has led to students extending their periods of study far beyond what is reasonable.
