Anyone familiar with British political history will be aware of Stanley Baldwin's summation of newspaper ownership: 'What the proprietorship of these papers is aiming at is power, and power without responsibility-the prerogative of the harlot through the ages.' These words come to mind when reading this account of the recent phone-hacking scandal involving News International. Tom Watson-MP for West Bromwich East-was part of the Commons Culture, Media & Sport (CMS) Committee which has been at the forefront of the investigation into phone hacking, and has teamed up with journalist Martin Hickman to produce this account of the affair to date.
