This edited volume of essays is part of the series 'global/local Islam' by Columbia University Press, focusing on international debates on identity and Islam, a topic that has certainly taken centre stage in European political and media debates. The current volume seeks to shift the discourse from one that emphasizes multiculturalism and European society to one more centred on Muslim subjectivity in relation to various European social configurations. In the introduction, the editors Frank Peter, Sarah Dornhof and Elena Arigita state that the publication provides a number of analytical approaches that see 'culture as a semiotic practice', which builds and shapes 'aesthetic and affective dispositions and faculties of subjects' (9). The chapters in the book focus on film, art history, literature and music with approaches ranging from the social sciences to the humanities.
