鉄鋼材料の腐食を理解するために,電気化学に基づく熱力学平衡と電極速度論の考え方の基礎を述べた。中性溶液中の酸素還元反応による腐食と表面に生成する腐食皮膜による腐食抑制機能は日常観察される腐食現象の理解にとって重要である。大気汚染と鉄鋼腐食の密接な関係を実例で紹介した。表面腐食皮膜によって耐候性を向上させた耐候性鋼の例を紹介し,さらに不働態皮膜によって耐食性を格段に向上させたステンレス鋼についても述べた。%Basic corrosion theory which has been developed based on electrochemistry is described with focusing the potential-pH diagram and the electrode kinetics to understand the corrosion process of iron and steel. The importance of oxygen reduction and inhibitive function of corrosion film on the steel surface in neutral solution is pointed out for understanding corrosion phenomena experienced in daily life. Close relationship between air pollution and steel corrosion is demonstrated. Development of weathering steel contributes for improving the atmospheric corrosion. Highly protective property of the passive film on stainless steel is described.
