Latest tests for prostatic neoplasia

At present, there is no convincing evidence of consistent clinical benefit from the early detec- tion of prostatic cancer although this is not equivalent to there being evidence of no benefit. Trials are currently under way but will not be completed until the early years of the next century. The advent of PSA has raised the question of whether, since prostatic cancer is so common, asymptomatic men should be routinely screened by PSA measurement. In the USA, doing this has led to a considerable increase in the number of men having biopsies and prostatectomies.
