A Novel Minor Saponin from the Leaves of Panax Ginseng. C. A. Meyer

Ginseng, one of the most famous oriental drugs in the world, is the roots of Panax ginseng. C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae) and has long been used as a tonic or a drug of longevity in Chinese traditional medicine. From ginseng, a number of saponins derived from protopanaxatriol, protopanaxadiol and oleanolic acid and some flavonoids have been isolated and identified in recent years. A new compound named ginseno-side-F_5, together with nine compounds, was isolated in the course of our study on the constituents of leaves of P. ginseng with the aim of searching for dammarane saponins with biological activity reducing the toxicity induced by some anti-cancer drugs. This paper deals with the isolation and structural elucidation of the new compound on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods.
