Promoted by Samarium diiodide (SmI_2),alpha,beta-unsaturated amides were formed from nitrogen anions (formed in situ by the reduction of nitro compounds) and alpha,beta-unsaturated esters.This reaction contrasts with the conjugate addition between arnines and alpha,beta-unsaturated esters promoted by samarium triiodide (SmI_3) and provides an alternative attractive way to obtain alpha,beta-unsaturated amides using SmI_2.
