The Chinese are conning, and I'm afraid

More and more in the popular media, particularly in America, there appears to be a building refrain of the growing China threat. Unfortunately, this dire and dramatic wail too often comes from those with too little experience and too much agenda, devoid of an even-handed presentation of the data and a perspective from time spent inside the country. Yes, the Chinese are coming - but they're not who you think. For some in the West, China's increased military spending looms as a major threat, but China is far more interested in peaceful development and, due to historical events, seems to harbor little imperial curiosity or intent. Although we tend to make fun of the term in the Western world, the idea of a "harmonious society" is crucial to their way of life. Besides, one could also take the position that a powerful partner in this region might prove to be of great value to our global interests as well. Western societies, of course, should not be so naive as to think strategic decisions in this area should be based on intention rather than capability, but that dialogue should likely be left to those with substantial expertise in this quarter.
