Senior executives face strong barriers as they encourage their boards of directors to assume more strategic roles. Through semi-structured interviews with executives in four large Australian companies, the author finds that boards currently have little involvement with corporate strategy and seldom fully understand the real functioning of the organization. Boards and senior managers need to forge more productive, closer relationships to better serve the company's interests.
