Six principles for shared management: a framework for the integrated economy

A management innovation refers to the invention and implementation of a novel management practice, technique, process or structure (Birkinshaw et al., 2008). As such, it involves a change in the form, state or quality of a company's management activities. In recent years, many firms have introduced several management innovations, which have substantially changed their management approaches and business strategies. For instance, companies rely on big data to apply more analytical management techniques than in the past. In addition, many firms put a stronger emphasis on achieving a dynamic competitive advantage by continuously innovating their products, services, processes and management tools. In the past, companies placed relatively more emphasis on securing their current competitive position rather than being open to cannibalizing their own products by continuously offering new models and solutions. Several of the trends refer to a "sharing economy", which involves the collaborative production and consumption of goods and services by different persons and organizations. Ultimately, these trends may help adaptable companies thrive, whereas others will face severe problems. Currently, many firms struggle to profit from these trends, which are partly based on new technological advances and partly on the evolution of markets and societies.
