Companies and not-for-profit organisations are increasingly exploring open business models. Many traditional companies are under attack from new players that act as a sort of market place or hub to create a new and powerful ecosystem. Before thinking about counter-strategies, established companies have to understand the underlying principles of these new open business models. These are motivation, object, community, actions and governance. Based on a thorough understanding, companies can then develop and execute their response strategy: ■ focusing on existing business models; ■ creating a second, potentially competing ecosystem; and ■ joining the open business model, fully or partly. This paper examines these response strategies and, therefore, helps practitioners to better navigate an increasingly complex business environment where it no longer good enough to constantly improve the existing business model. Managers have to understand and respond to innovative and increasingly open business models.
