Five years after the introduction of the euro, this book, written and edited by some prominent European central bankers, provides an assessment of the single currency's impact on the Euro Area financial landscape. They focus on integration as a key issue: the volume's ultimate goal is to investigate whether and to what extent financial systems of the member states have converged towards one another over the last five years. The volume is an interesting mixture of descriptive, conceptual and investigative analyses. The descriptive sections' role is to provide background for the subsequent investigative work by giving a general overview of the macro-economic environment, the monetary and regulatory framework and the financial structure of the Euro Area. It is fair to assume that a large number of future readers will already be familiar with most of the facts and issues presented here. However, the parallel comparison with the United States and Japan, applied consistently throughout these chapters, adds value even for experts, simply by placing financial developments in the Eurozone into an international perspective.
