Forensic Authenticity Analyses of the Header Data in Re-Encoded WMA Files from Small Olympus Audio Recorders

Detailed data analyses were conducted of the header sections of eleven (11) Windows Media Audio-formatted files produced on three small Olympus digital audio recorders and then re-encoded with four common audio editing programs. The purpose of this research was to identify changes made as a result of the re-encoding processes as they relate to forensic audio authenticity examinations. The header format structure, the procedures followed, the numerous changes identified in the headers of the re-encoded files, and a discussion of the authenticity implications are listed.
