Control Protocol Command Translation for Device Interoperability on Ethernet AVB Networks

Ethernet AVB ensures that time-sensitive data, such as audio and video, are reliably transported on Ethernet networks by guaranteeing the necessary quality of service. A standardized format for data transmission on AVB networks is defined in the IEEE 1722 standard document, and there is an effort toward control protocol interoperability between AVB devices by the IEEE 1722.1 working group. However, there are a number of sound control protocols that utilize AVB transport. This paper describes an approach for common control and interoperability between AVB devices that implement different control protocols. To demonstrate this approach, this paper describes the design and implementation of a command translator that enables communication between AES64 and OSC networked AVB devices.
