Drawing from its foundations in digital technology, multimedia equipment and systems will continue to evolve in the 21st century. Developers already have intriguing ideas about the possible uses and functions of multimedia equipment. Explorations of the technologies, hardware and software to bring such ideas to fruition will allow multimedia to progress toward its full potential. Many new services will appear as a result of these efforts. These developments will owe much to high-definition TV (HDTV) systems, which already are a keystone in multimedia systems.
