Samsung Counts on Alpha Chip To Carry Company Into System-On-A-Chip Business

After dominating the world of chips that remember, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is betting its future on chips that think. Pinched by a downturn in the memory market, the company is charting a new course with its Alpha chip, a microprocessor that will challenge the Pentium series of chips from industry leader Intel Corp. Samsung obtained a license in 1996 related to the Alpha chip under a strategic alliance with Digital Equipment Corp. of the United States. Samsung will start mass-producing and selling the 500Mhz Alpha chips at the end of this year. Samsung also is developing a 400Mhz Alpha chip.
