Until recently, product developers have taken batteries for granted as necessary but unsophisticated parts of portable electronic and electric products. Now, however, with the development of multimedia information and communication equipment, the electronics industry is giving batteries a closer look. Some product developers see them as just as important as semiconductors and LCDs in the race to create ever smaller and more powerful portable devices. As makers of multimedia devices strive to make smaller and lighter devices that still offer many functions and high performance, they seek batteries that are smaller and lighter, but still capable of providing energy for ever longer periods of time.
