The perspective of the historian-lodged between past and future-is particular. And no matter how subliminal, the biases and prejudices of contemporary conditions inevitably permeate any explanation of events from a time outside one's own. Anthony Vidler's Histories of the Immediate Present details how four historians of architectural modernism (Emil Kaufmann, Colin Rowe, Reyner Banham, Manfredo Tafuri) each utilised the wedged temporality of their position in order to 'invent' a variety of different modernisms respectively, each with an agenda for their architectural present.
