Sacred Space: Architecture For Worship In The 21st Century

This symposium was an ecumenical invitation to reflect on sacred worship space in an era when globalization increasingly removes, us from the community values that are essential to Christianity. Though something of a novelty within the theological academy, the symposium became a true journey that deepened our understanding of the roles of sacred space and spirituality and what they mean to architects, artists, and theologians who are con- fronting rapidly changing rules about religion and design. In a faith-filled atmosphere, scholars and practitioners spent two days discussing and debating diverse and varied opinions about sacred space. Dominating the spirited conversation, and largely stimulated by Louis Nevelson's overview of twentieth-century church architecture, was the question of whether an American church architecture exists today. There were also extensive discussions about the architecture of the "megachurch," prompted by Dr Robert Schuller's keynote address. While most participants considered this an important phenomenon, they concluded that it was distant from the concept of sacred space per se.
