Architecture and the Canadian Fabric

The publication of this collection of interdisciplinary essays, many of which were first presented as part of a lecture series organized by the volume's editor, Rhodri Windsor Liscombe, illustrates how far Canadian architectural history has come over the past decade and a half. Following the appearance of Harold Kalman's two-volume A History of Canadian Architecture in 1994, scholars have built on, questioned, and tested the limits of the authoritative, linear history of Canadian architecture put forward by Kalman. In the seventeen essays that comprise Architecture and the Canadian Fabric, authors hailing from architecture history, art history, and visual studies deploy contemporary critical theory in a variety of ways. This includes examining the symbolic and social production of spaces, introducing vernacular building types into the canon, and delving into the historiography of various episodes in Canadian architecture.
