It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the first issue of 2014. Forty years ago the first issue of Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS) appeared - though initially called the Bulletin of Applied Statistics. Gopal Kanji founded the Journal and was its only Editor for almost 35 years until his retirement in 2007. The annual 'Gopal Kanji Prize', for the best paper appearing in JAS, is a lasting memorial to his goal of promoting excellence in the practical use of statistics. I have now been Editor for six years and I am pleased to say that I have agreed to continue for another three years. JAS continues to have a strong reputation as a leading applied statistics journal with a truly international audience. I continue Gopal's aim and encourage the publication of high-quality papers which address important applied statistical issues in an accessible and rigorous manner.
