Preface to Special Topic: Plenary and Invited Papers from the 29th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2008

It is with great enthusiasm that we introduce in this issue of Journal of Applied Physics the articles from two plenary and 13 invited talks presented during the 29th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors (ICPS29) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 27 July and 1 August 2008. The organizers were very pleased to host the first issue of this series to take place in the Southern Hemisphere, in particular, in South America. The articles in this collection have undergone the same review process as standard journal articles.
