9th European Laser Ablation Workshop, ETH Zuerich, 19th-21st July 2006

Twenty-one years have passed since the first landmark publication in laser ablation ICP-MS by Alan Gray in 1985, and the recent workshop hosted by the ETH Zuerich has shown that the technique is coming of age. However, we should not be too hasty to open the champagne, as there remain many problems to be solved in order to make it a truly routine and mature analytical tool. This workshop, now in its ninth season, broke well outside its remit as a European meeting to include at least 160 delegates from 22 different countries and all 5 continents.
