This book is a welcome addition to the statistical literature. Saddlepoint approximations are an underused technique, possibly due in part to the complex nature of understanding and implementing the mathematical derivations leading to these approximations. Although this book cannot avoid the lengthy and necessary mathematical proofs and derivations, it does an admirable job of making them more accessible.
