The exploratory study yielded clues as to how researchers use information, and showed that physicists do not use direct quotations from citations and an extended follow-up study was not warranted. However, further studies of how scientists use referenced information would provide the basis for improving information retrieval systems. For example, an online fast-track retrieval system might automatically include title, abstract, full-text of, or tables and figures from, a reference, when it is cited more than once or with the author's name in the text, or in a section other than the introduction.
