Successful Management of Bleeding Due to Solitary Rectal Ulcer via Topical Application of Ankaferd Blood Stopper

Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS; Ankaferd Drug Inc., Istanbul,rnTurkey) is a novel hemostatic agent, a herbal extract obtainedrnfrom five plants: Thymus vulgaris, Glycyrrhiza glabra,rnVitis vinifera, Alpinia officinarum, and Urtica dioica.1 The basicrnmechanism of action of ABS is the formation of an encapsulatedrnprotein network that provides focal points for vital erythrocyternaggregation.1 ABS acts independently of the classicrncoagulation cascade and contributes to the wound healingrnprocess.1 The anti-infectivity action of ABS had been demonstratedrnin vitro and preliminary successful applications inrnmediastinal bleeding associated with cardiac surgery andrnupper gastrointestinal bleeding represented novel clues forrnABS activity.2–4 We present the case of a patient with a bleedingrnsolitary rectal ulcer in which ABS was successfully usedrnadjunctive to 5-aminosalicylic acid.
