FOR the majority of the last century, the primary means fornaircraft control through the use of elevators for pitch control,nailerons for roll control, and a rudder for yaw control has remainednlargely unchallenged. For aircraft designers around the world, thisncontrol methodology represents the most reliable, robust, generallynapplicable, and effective means of aircraft attitude control thatncurrently exists.While it is certainly true that this method of aircraftncontrol has become much more complex as the rapid advance innaerospace technologies continues to accelerate [1], a wide-rangingnsuccessor to this traditional method that can significantly improvenupon this baseline method, giving substantial improvements in effi-nciency and performance, continues to remain operationally complexnand/or difficult to justify.
