摘要

The world's population has grown, from approximately 1.5 billion at the beginning of the 20th century to more than 6 billion today. This population increase has been accompanied by the rapid growth of intensive agriculture with its associated, significant impacts on the environment. Over the next 50 yr, the Earth's human population is predicted to increase from the current level to more than 9 billion, creating a parallel or disproportionate increase in demand for agricultural commodities-both crop and animal. Without scientific research to inform policy decisions, there will likely be greater environmental impacts associated with this future growth.
