The System is Broken

With the kind of aviation growth that everyone agrees is before us— passenger and cargo growth is accelerating and airplane operations are growing even faster, reaching record numbers—it is becoming clearer than ever that the U.S. aviation system lacks a functional structure and sufficient funding to meet airport and system needs. During Airports Council International-North America's (ACI-NA) Economic Specialty Conference last month, I presented my view that the traditional approach to the policymaking, governance, management, and funding of the aviation system is broken. Fixing it will require a collaborative effort from all industry players and government, with some new risk-taking prominently featured, to put us on a course where passengers receive the level of service they deserve.
