Impacts of Increasing Reliance on Automation in Air Traffic Control Systems

Classic systems can often be hierarchically decomposed into subsystems. System of systems engineering deals with more complicated relationships among systems and their life cycles, but is still primarily concerned with the relationships among the systems. Trade-offs between systems can result in impacts in the same dimension to another system. Complex future systems may require a new perspective of not only the systems that constitute a system, but also the systems engineering processes for those interacting systems.rnThis raises more systems engineering issues and requires that systems engineering processes may need to be applied in new, innovative ways to deal with complex systems. In particular, specialty engineering areas such as human factors and safety engineering must evolve.
