Moving NextGen Forward

2011 was a busy and productive year for NextGen implementation of new procedures and new ground-based infrastructure, and the FAA's metroplex initiative is off to a running start. The FAA's Optimization of Airspace and Procedures in the Metroplex effort, focused on major metropolitan areas, aims to identify and implement near-term Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and airspace redesign improvements that we can complete and place in service within three years. A metroplex is a metropolitan area encompassing multiple airports, which can include both commercial and general aviation. When appropriate, we also try to reduce or eliminate conflicts between different airports' arrival or departure flight paths.
