Cyberattacks represent one of the most serious threats to many industries, but especially to the aviation industry. At the very least they can cause millions of euros in damages, but at worst they could be devastating and allow terrorists to achieve their goals without having to set foot on a single aircraft. Cyberattacks have the potential to jeopardise the aviation industry's most important objective, namely to provide safe and secure transportation. Regulators at international level, like ICAO, or at regional level, like the European Union, have begun to react to this threat with new laws and regulations that are critically analysed by Benjamyn Scott in his book. Scott starts out with a number of essential definitions, namely of the terms cybersecurity and cyberattack, and a brief description of cyber-based attack methods and their potential victims, inter alia airlines and providers of ground infrastructure. His description of the attackers' methods and tactics and some of their successful attacks is an eye-opener for those readers who are not particularly familiar with the issue. These attacks, however, have meanwhile led to the adoption of counter-measures by the European Union. In 2013 the EU published a cybersecurity strategy in order to address the evolving cyber-threat landscape. Scott praises this first response by the EU as a robust foundation for enhancing cybersecurity.
