Obituary Charlie Harman

The 7th of August 2013 is the second anniversary of the passing of Charles (Charlie) Morgan Harman, founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Transportation (initially known as the High Speed Ground Transportation Journal). Charlie was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Duke University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. He was the first PhD hired in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and served with dis-tinction for 43 years until retirement in 2004. Charlie was instrumental in building the postgraduate program in the Department and served as the Director for many years. He was also sought after by Dean's of the School of Engineering at Duke who valued his vast experience and wise counsel. Charlie's interest in transport research began when he received a US Federal Grant to study transport of passengers and freight by using underground pneumatic tube systems.
