Making a Collection Count: A Holistic Approach to Library Collection Management

Technical services, public services, administrative functions: It is common for libraries to split their organization along these lines. Hibner and Kelly introduce instead a holistic model, reuniting the various functions in the library and demonstrating how they work together. Correct shelving of an item, for example, depends upon the item having correct cataloging, where the call number on the item matches the call number on the spine and the information in the cataloging record accurately reflects the item in hand. Everything is symbiotic, and all parts of the library have to work together. Every function in the library contributes to making information available for use.
