Study on Enhancing Accident Prevention Skills Using a Conductor Training Simulator

Central Japan Railway Company (hereafter"JR Central") developed and introduced a conductor training program for effective accident prevention in hazardous situations (which can threaten the life of passengers). Although JR Central had been utilizing conductor simulators for training purposes, educational benefit of the simulator was not as much as it used to be since conductors became familiar with predetermined scenarios. To improve the training," Amid Screens," named after "AMI-DO" screen doors, have been introduced to the training: images on Amid Screens are overlaid on the ones from simulators to produce true-to-life hazardous situations whenever and wherever needed. The training method has since been named as "Amid Training and it has become widely used throughout JR Central. This paper describes Amid Training, from the background of related studies to the training materials developed.
