This special issue of Japanese Journal of Applied Physics contains papers that were presented at the 5th International Conference on White LEDs and Solid-State Lighting (WLED-5), which was held at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel, Korea during June 1-5 2014. Since the first conference in Tokyo, Japan in 2007, WLED has been a premier international conference for experts from academia, industry, and national laboratories, where they present their latest progress and exchange ideas on physics and state-of-the-art technology of white LEDs and Solid-State Lighting. The WLED-5 was an extraordinary successful, attracting more than 300 delegates, presenters, and sponsors from 10 countries, and providing them with wonderful opportunities to share professional experiences, expand our professional networks, receive updates on the latest advances in science and technology, and enjoy wonderful social times with each other in beautiful Jeju island. It is our great pleasure to acknowledge and thank all the participants and the members of the WLED-5 Committees for their enthusiastic role for the success of the conference.
