This returns us to the questions posed at the beginning of how arnbuilding can be changed before the reception of history is altered. Evenrnthe simplest gestures or changes can enhance or eliminate design orrnsocial history. These are the telling details that accomplish a “narrative”rnspace, a component of contemporary renovation theory.x Further,rnmaintaining and cultivating facades assists the success of renovated andrnpreserved structures.rnSuch individual-driven machizukuri まちづくりexisting outside thernstate restrictions of important cultural properties also provides arnpreservation network model that offers more freedom to designers andrnwooden building owners. Nevertheless one must account for howrndesign and program changes will affect a building’s local and social role,rnand not to treat buildings of local history as entirely blank slates. Arndesigner may renovate and alter the use of a traditional wooden buildingrnwhile maintaining its essential program and historical qualities.
