When Admiral Craig Faller took over the helm of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in November 2018, he knew he had to overcome a major hurdle: how to police and defend maritime space that encompasses the Caribbean Sea, eastern Pacific, and south Atlantic with far too few ships. Joint Interagency Task Force South, the SOUTHCOM component charged with detecting and monitoring for illicir trafficking in the air and maritime domains to facilirate international and interagency interdiction and apprehension, has an operating area of 108 million square km.
