Naval mines: The constant threat

On 21 February the French Navy's Charles de Gaulle Carrier Strike Group set sail from Toulon for a four-month operational deployment across the eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, and the Gulf. Ahead of the deployment, the French Navy announced in late January that Charles de Gaulle had carried out critical tests of its closed-loop degaussing system: a device intended to reduce the vessel's magnetic signature and reduce the risks of triggering influence mines, thereby unintentionally underlining the continuing relevance of sea mines as a threat to modern warships.
