The UK Royal Navy (RN) has over the past five years enshrined the increased exploitation of maritime autonomous systems as a key tenet of capability planning. This ambition assumed a more tangible form in April 2019 when the service established the NavyX programme to serve as an incubator and accelerator for innovation in autonomous systems and artificial intelligence "We in the navy are just at a point where we want to transform really, really quickly," Commander Sean Trevethan, fleet robotics officer and surface combatant combat systems desk officer in Navy Command's Maritime Capability area, told Janes at last year's DSEI 2019 exhibition in London's docklands. "We understand the pace of technology and also what is available to us [and] what we're trying to do in the navy is do this at pace."
