Initial at-sea testing of the GDM-008 Millennium 35 mm inner-layer defence system has been successfully completed aboard the Royal Danish Navy (RDN) combat support ship HDMS Absalon, according to manufacturer Oerlikon Contraves.The RDN is the first series production customer for the gas-operated 35/1,000 revolver cannon and associated AHEAD (Advanced Hit Efficiency And Destruction) programmable fuze ammunition.Oerlikon Contraves, a subsidiary of Rheinmetall, received an initial order in late 2004 for four guns from Denmark's Naval Materiel Command (now subsumed into the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation [DALO]), with an option for a further six to equip three follow-on patrol ships (latterly reclassified as frigates).
