Resurgam: National security interest keeps Sweden's sovereign submarine capability to the fore

It was during 2014 that submarines twice became headline news in Sweden. In April that year, under intense political pressure, Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) agreed to relinquish its ownership of the Kockums naval shipbuilding and ship repair business (by then trading as TKMS AB). This move, spurred by the Swedish government's determination to reconstitute a sovereign engineering and industrial capability in the underwater defence sector, saw Kockums' assets - encompassing a shipbuilding facility in Karlskrona, a design centre in Malmoe and a support operation at Muskoe -brought back into Swedish ownership in July 2014 under the control of Saab.
